Who am I really?
My name is John Stavrou and I am a self-taught make-up artist. I started applying makeup at a very young age to cover my imperfections, never imagining that this hobby would develop into a lifestyle and eventually a career. From the very first moment, I felt that makeup was the language through which I could truly express myself.
In 2020, I started to actively engage with social media. And even though I knew that my appearance, my diversity and my voice did not resemble what we are used to in the Greek reality, I saw a world supporting me. People who identified, who felt like they belonged, who believed in me. These people are the reason I never stopped.
Before I started my company, I worked whatever I could: I smoked in basements, I made hookahs in Monastiraki, I painted clients in houses and studios. There was no financial help from my family or any “support”, it was just me and my partner. To start JOHN STAVROU COSMETICS, I put everything I had and didn’t have. Literally. I lived for a long time in an abandoned building above Victoria Square with my partner, without anyone knowing where I lived. I was ashamed to say it.
But if there’s one thing I’ve always known about myself, it’s that when I want something, I’ll chase it to the end. I’m not just creative. I’m stubborn. I’m a person who works, who tries, who falls and gets up. I’m someone who has never forgotten who they are. And that’s why I’m here.
The journey behind the brand . . .
How it all began
JOHN STAVROU COSMETICS was born when I was 20 years old. I didn’t create it to make money. I started it to leave my mark on an industry that until then didn’t leave room for people like me. I wanted to bring to Greece makeup cultures that I saw abroad, to create a brand that doesn’t think “squarely”, that looks ahead.
I started with just 3 codes. No investment. No external support. Only faith, passion and work. The public supported me from the first moment. Clients that I have painted until today, influencers who believed in me, people of all genders and ages who gave me visibility and strength. The only thing I gave them back was my absolute truth.
The beginning of JOHN STAVROU COSMETICS
From the very beginning, I wanted to make products that I could use on myself, on my clients, on anyone. Products that I would love, that I would trust, that would speak for themselves. I fought for the texture, the quality, the colors, the composition. We don't operate on a shoestring.
We collaborate with selected Greek laboratories, house our production responsibly, with the contribution of chemists that allow us to create our own custom products from scratch. All our products are 100% Greek, cruelty-free, hypoallergenic, and all our ingredients are clearly listed on the site and on the packaging.
I didn't just enter the cosmetics industry. I experienced it from every angle: as a customer, as an artist, as a content creator, as an entrepreneur. And through each of these experiences, I was putting a little bit of work into the brand I dreamed of creating.
Our philosophy and vision
My vision is to embrace as many people as possible, and to build a company that unites. A company accessible to everyone: regardless of color, identity, gender, preferences, origin. A company that breaks Greek norms and stereotypes, that gives opportunities to people who in Greece do not have them.
I know how difficult it is to fight in this country when you are different. When you are young, when you have no “support”, when you do not belong to the “normal”. Despite all this, I chose to fight here. Because this is where I grew up. And here are the people I want to support: people with different sexuality, color, body, appearance, history.
My goal is for every product that bears the name JOHN STAVROU COSMETICS to make each person feel unique, strong and special. Because each of us is special. And each of us is equally invaluable.
